It’s raining…. Will the raindrops be laughing when they fall and shatter on the wet land from the huge dark clouds? How many expressions does each rain have? It’s smiling like a pearl , sitting on a small green leaf. The Almighty had appointed the rain to do a great job. It comes to quench the thirst of thousands. I feel like dancing in the rain. When each droplet falls on my body, each new hope is sprouting in me. It’s innocence washed away all my tears.
Now, I remember what my social science teacher had taught me about monsoon in my primary classes .
The climates in Kerala can be divided into Winter, Summer, South-West monsoon and North-East monsoon. Among these seasons Kerala receives the highest rainfall during the South-West monsoon and North-East monsoon.
South-West monsoon is the main rainy season in Kerala. This season (Edavappathi - as the rains starts by the middle of the Malayalam month Edavam) begins by the end of May or early June with the outset of the South-West monsoon winds . The next few months are periods of torrential rain . Lying on the windward side of the Western Ghats and being the first state to be hit by the monsoon winds , Kerala receives copious rainfall. Almost 85% of the rains received in Kerala is contributed by the monsoons . South-West monsoon in Kerala lasts till the end of September.
North-East monsoon also known as the retreating monsoon or the reverse monsoon, hits Kerala during the return of the South-West monsoon winds . These rains (Thulavarsham-as it rains during the Malayalam month of thulam ) are in the months of October and November and sometimes lasts till December. Heavy afternoon rains accompanied by thunder and lightening is the main characteristic of the season. Days are warm and humid but there is not much variation in temperature.
Whatever it may be , I am sure that taking a rain bath is much more better than studying all these things .We Keralites are lucky to have the monsoon rain .
But, sometimes rain makes lacks of people shelterless. It bears the curses of so many people. Silently, it changes its expression into a devil. It becomes rude and shower continuously with all it’s energy. And at last…………….,how many disasters ……..?
Still everyone loves rain . Everyone waits for it……….,to hear it’s sweet music ……,to see it’s innocence………….and to feel it’s divine love………

Hai, I am one of the favorites in your life, I am a mobile but I am sad now. Do you know what is the reason? Of course you know ,but you are making me sad. When I came in the society I expected lots of dignity. But I am really sorry for this society and I really hate it. All are misusing my good features. My inventors gave me lots of useful applications only to satisfy your needs. But you try to misuse me in every sense. I really feel ashamed of all human beings who exploit my good qualities. If you use me in a way I promise to be your good friend.I think machines are much better than human beings. In olden times we thought that human heart was full of love and care. But what had changed you so much?
I am really embarrassed about you people. I know I have both good and bad qualities. Calling and messaging are my basic duties, but even these duties of mine are manipulated by people like you through fake calls and indecent messages. Fake calls and missed calls often lead to bad relationships. Mobile cameras are used for taking unwanted pictures. Photos taken without permission are sometimes morphed and spread through internet. I am helpless witness of all these. I am becoming a craze for everyone including children. Parents proudly present me to their children without considering their age. Young children unaware of my advantages, often falls into pitfalls. Everyone blame me for this, but I am not the one responsible.
Most of the people use me while driving, especially youngsters. This leads to accidents. Cell phone conversation distracts drivers attention. If they show a little bit of patience to stop for a while, most of the accidents can be avoided. I am innocent in all these cases.
Most of you will agree with me that I am a very useful tool that you just can’t do without. But in most schools the use of mobile phones is banned. Young people with mobiles are punished. I think that this should not be the case. Some different plan should be implemented to prevent the misuse of mobiles, instead of outright banning of the use of mobile phones. -- VIMISHA V.M, JINCY.S.KOLLANOOR
I completed my plus two from G.V.H.S.S for girls, nadakkavu. Those days were some of the most exquisite days of my life. One of the happy moments that are still fresh in memories is that of our two-day trip to Ooty - ‘the queen of hills’. Both the teachers & the students put
their best hand forward to make the trip exciting. We started our journey in two buses on a cold December morning. All of us were loaded with bags and cameras. When the bus started, we waved goodbye to our parents who had came to see off us. Soon our bus was filled with music & our bus became a ‘dance floor’. Everyone flowed along with the rhythms.
At noon, we had our lunch from a forest on our way. We sat in the ground without roofs over our heads. We were in the cradle of nature. The sights around were so awesome, I clicked my camera many times. We saw many tea plantations, lush green forests & like as we got closer to our destination. We had to go through 14 hairpin bends to reach Ooty- one of the popular hill stations of India. With lots of fun and entertainment, we reached our restaurant cum lodging. All our stomachs were crying for food. The cold wind that swept inside the bus, penetrated through our bones. Soon we were stuffed with ear-mufflers, sweaters, scarf, etc. After having food, we soon went to our rooms & slept like a log.
Next morning when I got up & looked through the window, I felt as if clouds had come to earth. Our mouths were emitting smoke!! After having breakfast, we took some photos from outside the lodging. Those moments are vivid in my memories. Before long, we boarded the bus to be off for Ooty Lake.
When we reached the lake, there were many tourists like us. Year after year, the no. Of tourists coming to ooty to escape from the heat of life and earth is increasing. Ooty Lake is an artificial lake made by John Sullivan, first collector of ooty. Boating through the lake is very popular. The Boat house established alongside the lake, offers boating facilities. Many of my friends & teachers had pleasure trips across the lake via speed boats & paddleboats. A mini garden has also been constructed here & it had an amusement park too. The cool breeze gently touched us. We walked through the park to see the beauty of the place.
Returning from there, we took a trip to Coonoor in a toy train. All of us rushed to get a place near the window. The ride
to Coonoor was a treasure for our eyes. The views through the forests & plantations were breath taking. After returning from the trip, we reached the restaurant, had lunch, packed our bags & headed towards one of the most popular attractions of Ooty- Botanical garden. Botanical garden is situated in Udaghamandalam. The garden has around 1000s of species. Botanical garden is maintained by the Horticulture department of govt.of Tamilnadu. The garden is so magnificent that we will appreciate the efforts put in maintaining the garden. There is a fossilized tree trunk in the garden which is 20 million years old. We felt like we were walking through a green carpet that covers the whole garden.
The breeze had the smell & taste of nature. We spent some wonderful moments exploring the garden. I should say that ¾ camera was filled with the lovely sights of the garden.
Getting out of the garden, we went around in search of some shopping centers. As Ooty is known for its homemade chocolates, I bought some. Plastic bags were completely banned there & shopkeepers used recycled papers or cloth bags. After having dinner and stepping back to the bus, all were gloomy and tired as well. By dawn we reached from where we started, safe and sound.
Enjoy the sight and sounds of Ootty. - Pooja Prakash
